EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
