A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the possible security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in any cars.
Security Guidance for MoD Staff
During a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Defence Context
The announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.
This broader security situation highlights the importance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of official operations, including vehicle use to communication practices.
