The star has donated the complete sum of his £25,000 honor prize money to the MVT, which works to protect the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

Fender was awarded the award on 16 October as his third album People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the past year.

He has chosen to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"I personally would not have achieved this success if it weren't for all the performances I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was just getting going," remarked Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these venues have shut down – approximately 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a small levy to their admission fees, which goes to help local stages.

Fender also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to support 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

The money supported locations that were dealing with potential shutdown due to issues caused by water damage, blazes and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Other venues received financial assistance in modernizing infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and concertgoers.

"The concept that money from performances in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has commented.

Fender is among several artists to give his honor prize money to charitable organizations.

In Pulp received the award in the year 1996 for their album their work, frontman Jarvis Cocker declared that the band would contribute their winnings to the organization the charity.

That year, musician she divided her bounty across several good causes, including the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed new equipment," Ms Dynamite shared with the media.

In recent years, Ezra Collective gave their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their act, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

Also winners that year they donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was diagnosed the disease.

"Winning was sufficient," stated vocalist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the honor. So our winning affected another person's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had rescued two grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under local control.

One venue in that area and The Croft in the city were acquired under the public acquisition program, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
