The English along with Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their famous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked South Africa before the final, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

If the groups conclude according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
