They're Repeating across America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the American president began displaying the public his intentions for a gilded ballroom two times larger compared to the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to construct it.

He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties from his cuts to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently research predicted his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – truly, no former commander would have imagined – solo demolishing major areas of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of multiple the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.

We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' into 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of animosity who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, however it is still unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense about him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or nones. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.

It is decidedly absolutely not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; instead, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for fellow humans, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the additional cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you ought to provide him your sweater too.

The apparent and clear fact that Christ of the gospels requests a form of profound affection focused on the needy has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality requiring to be restrained. During the 1950s it was contained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Highest Among Us

Hence I have become encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance regarding Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the initiative that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners during all protests and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?

America is best defended, essentially, by reference to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it imply pretending the most damaging of both America and Christianity was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and conviction, a combination that serious national faithful should embrace.
