The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the right to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
